INTRODUCTION TO BOTOX COSMETIC® AND FILLERS
It’s almost funny how we’ve tried to make our wrinkles sound nice and friendly, with names like “smile lines and “laugh lines,” but it’s no laughing matter when they appear on your face for the first time. Most of us will see the beginning of wrinkles between our 30’s and 40’s, though depending upon your genetic makeup and choices about alcohol and tobacco consumption, they could appear earlier or later. Regardless, it’s nice to now that Traverse City plastic surgeon Dr. F. Matthew Smith is known throughout Traverse City as the Michigan plastic surgeon who knows how to treat them, giving you the ability to stay young looking longer!
There’s a reason that BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers have become immensely popular: they are inexpensive compared with facial rejuvenation surgery, they last a fairly long time, and they show immediate results (the effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic will take a few days compared with dermal fillers whose results show immediately).
If you’re like many of the patients who come to us from the Traverse City, Michigan area, non-surgical facial rejuvenation with BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers will provide a safe and effective alternative to a facial surgery and return the youthful appearance that you desire.
About BOTOX® Cosmetic
Botulinum toxin, commonly dubbed “BOTOX® Cosmetic,” is designed to relax the muscles into which they are injected. BOTOX® Cosmetic—made from a highly purified form of these toxins—interferes with the muscles’ ability to contract. The cosmetic benefit to using BOTOX® Cosmetic is a reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in aging skin. Most popularly used in spots where skin tends to be delicate and thin (i.e. around the eyes, forehead and mouth), the relaxant is administered with a very fine needle that causes little or no discomfort. If you have concerns over the use of needles, Dr. Smith will pre-treat you with a cream that numbs the injection sites.
Like BOTOX® Cosmetic, Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvederm minimize the appearance of wrinkles. Because they are “water-loving” products, hyaluronic fillers attract a high volume of water, thereby increasing volume in your skin. These manufactured proteins are similar to the natural chemicals in your skin and are absorbed safely by the body. In fact, the substance functions much like the natural hyaluronic acids known for giving skin its smooth exterior. The benefit of hyaluronic acid fillers is that they are effective on the skin found between the eyebrows and around the nose. Dr. Smith can also inject Juvederm into the lips and the backs of your hands to plump them up to a youthful appearance.
Radiesse is another absorbable substance used to add volume to aging skin. Unlike BOTOX® Cosmetic and hyaluronic acid fillers, Radiesse stimulates the growth of collagen—a protein found in your teeth and bones—by bolstering the natural proteins in your skin. The results are long lasting, often up to an entire year and even more. Individual results vary according to age, skin condition and type, and environmental factors, but Radiesse has offered patients a chance to almost permanently reduce the signs of aging!
Radiesse is used in deeper tissue such as the skin around the cheekbones. In addition to minimizing wrinkles and fine lines, Radiesse is also used to fill in scars and plump up hands that have lost their youthful appearance. It is most widely used on deep nasolabial folds—the sagging skin around the nose and mouth—but is not is not used on lips. For that, Dr. Smith uses Juvederm.
HOW WRINKLE TREATMENTS ARE PERFORMED IN TRAVERSE CITY, MI
Another one of the reasons Dr. Smith performs non-surgical facial procedures with such frequency is that patients can get in and out of the office quickly, like over a lunch break. The injections themselves take about 15 minutes and your results appear immediately, though BOTOX COSMETIC® may require 3-5 days to fully relax the muscle area(s) into which it is injected.
RECOVERY FROM BOTOX COSMETIC® AND DERMAL FILLERS
A mils redness and swelling are likely to appear on your skin around the injection sites but this will last a few minutes to perhaps an hour, depending on how sensitive your skin is. Slight to mild swelling might occur as well, but these reactions will fade very quickly, i.e., usually by the time you leave the office. While you’re there, we’ll apply an ice pack to diminish swelling and redness.
Dr. Smith will give you a few instructions to follow in order to achieve your optimal results. You should not lie horizontally for the first 4 hours after BOTOX® Cosmetic, and you should limit exercise for 24 hours to allow for sufficient absorption. To maintain your high results, we suggest that you make your next appointment at every treatment to make certain your treatments are spaced according to the type of filler used and to ensure that you are given an appointment most convenient for your schedule.
