Breast Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction is often recommended for women who have undergone a mastectomy because of cancer or a pre-cancerous condition. Most mastectomy patients are medically appropriate for reconstruction even if further treatment is needed, like radiation or chemotherapy.
By using a number of different techniques, surgeons can create a breast that is similar to the shape, size and feel of the breast that was removed. Doctors say women can consider two options: immediate breast reconstruction, which is done at the same time as the mastectomy; or delayed breast reconstruction, which isn’t performed until after the patient has healed from the mastectomy. Immediate reconstruction offers many benefits, such as preserving a greater amount of skin, reducing scarring, and dealing with only one recovery process. It may not be for all women, however. Delayed procedures are useful for women who have had a mastectomy and then decide at a later date that they are interested in reconstruction.
Patients usually report that breast reconstruction enhances their appearance, contributes to their quality of life, and creates symmetry in the body. It also helps restore women’s self-confidence and femininity, while creating a sense of wholeness.
