INTRODUCTION TO TRAVERSE CITY LIPOSUCTION
Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure in which fat is removed through a cannula, a thin tube that removes the fat through gentle suction. Although liposuction can be performed virtually anywhere on the body, it’s most popular on the thighs, the belly, love handles and back, though it is also effective in the neck, under the chin, or in the cheeks. It’s Dr. F. Matthew Smith’s experience that enables him to deliver a consistently good result using power-assisted, ultrasonic assisted and tumescent liposuction.
APPROPRIATE CANDIDATES FOR LIPOSUCTION WITH DR. F. MATTHEW SMITH IN TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN
Healthy adult men and women who have reasonable expectations are likely to be good candidates for liposuction. For those who have lost weight and need liposuction to create the final results, it’s wise to be within 10 lbs of your final weight goal. Please keep in mind that, regardless of what you might have read about liposuction, it is not a healthy weight loss tool. Removing too much fat at one time can be dangerous. Dr. F. Matthew Smith is extremely careful about this aspect of liposuction because, although results are important, your safety is the most important thing.
Traverse City board certified plastic surgeon Dr. F. Matthew Smith has an excellent reputation with his liposuction procedures. During your consultation at his Traverse City plastic surgery office, he’ll review the potential for liposuction to help you reach your body goals, and discuss any other potential alternative that might be best for you.
HOW TRAVERSE CITY LIPOSUCTION IS PERFORMED
Dr. Smith performs most of his cosmetic surgery, including liposuction, in an accredited surgery suite at the Munson Medical Center. With the latest cutting-edge equipment and a fully trained staff, the Munson Medical Center is an ideal place for his patients. Depending on the amount of liposuction needed, a liposuction procedure is typically scheduled for 60-90 minutes, possibly longer if it is combined with another procedure, such as a tummy tuck/abdominoplasty or a breast procedure. General anesthesia is used because Dr. Smith wants to ensure a well-controlled and safe surgical experience that is comfortable for his patient. Occasionally, a small area of liposuction can be performed in the office under local anesthesia with or without sedation.
Once anesthesia has been induced, Dr. Smith will proceed with the liposuction procedure. Tiny incisions are made to allow room to insert the cannulae. Once the procedure has been completed, these are closed with very tiny sutures or covered with steri-strips, depending on the size of the area treated, and a bandage is applied.
RECOVERY FROM A LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURE
As with any procedure, it’s wise to listen to your body and respect the fact that you are healing, as everyone heals at a different rate. Depending on the size of the area treated, you may feel fine to return to activities immediately, but most people take 1 or more days away from social and work obligations.
Dr. Matthew Smith’s patients are quite satisfied following the healing process when they are able to see the results of their liposuction procedure. Please call us today to schedule a consultation to discuss your interests in liposuction with Dr. F. Matthew Smith at his Traverse City plastic surgery office.
