DR. SMITH'S STORY
Dr. Smith is originally from Bay City, Michigan. His mother, Teri, taught English and German at Central High School. Fred, his dad, worked for General Motors. Currently, they are both retired and still reside in Bay City. Also, his big sister, Kathi, is a nurse manager at Covenant Breast Health Center in Saginaw.
Growing up, Matthew had a variety of hobbies and interests. He enjoyed building model ships with his dad, playing the piano and trumpet, playing football, softball and volleyball and being involved in Boy Scouts. In fact, he achieved Eagle Scout status as a high school student. He was also recruited by Princeton College to play football. However, with an eye on medical school, Matthew decided to concentrate on academics and attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
For medical school, Matthew chose to attend Michigan State University. During his second year, he participated in the Study Abroad program, spending 6 weeks in England at the University of London.
After medical school, Dr. Smith moved to Jacksonville, Florida, for his general surgery residency. Through the University Medical Center at the University of Florida, he was involved in the emergency room and trauma team. Interestingly, a unique opportunity was offered to Dr. Smith: to join the NASA Shuttle Support Team. Via helicopter, he would fly to the Kennedy Space Center to tend to the astronauts during space shuttle launches and landings. He was chosen as Chief Resident during his 5th and final year of residency at the University of Michigan to complete his education.
